In 1997 he qualified to lecture in Orthopaedics with a paper on the subject of "Biomechanical and clinical investigations aimed at optimising form correction and stabilising cases of idiopathic scoliosis" and participated in the development of numerous corrective and stabilising ventral and dorsal instrumentation systems for optimising form correction and/or stabilising the spine, and in relevant demonstration operations in Germany and other countries.

Prof. Halm was Chief Senior Physician and permanent deputy to the director of the Clinic and Outpatient Department for General Orthopaedics at the Westphalian Wilhelm University of Münster until 28 February 2000, when he was appointed Senior Physician of the Spinal Surgery Clinic and Scoliosis Centre at the hospital in Neustadt/Holstein.
