Prof. Dr. med. Hans-Peter Bruch is Director of the Surgical Clinic at the University of Lübeck, focusing on vascular and visceral surgery.

Following his studies in Würzburg and internships in Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Würzburg, Prof. Bruch gained his doctorate in 1974 and worked initially as a staff physician in Munich and Mellrichstadt. In 1981 he was appointed a surgical specialist. After his habilitation in the field of surgery in 1981, he was appointed an independent lecturer on 17 March 1982.

In 1982 he became Senior Physician at the Würzburg University Clinic for Hand, Accident, Vascular and General Surgery. From March 1985 onward Prof. Bruch was head of the Würzburg University Surgical Outpatient Department, before being appointed senior Chief Physician at the Würzburg University Surgical Clinic on 17.3.1986. After his appointment as Professor of Surgery for life (2.10.1986), Prof. Bruch was made Director of the Surgical Clinic of the University of Lübeck on 1.05.1990.

Since 1992 Prof. Bruch has been a member of the Executive Board of the European Council of Coloproctology. From 1996 - 2004 he was Chairman of the Coloproctology Working Group of the German Surgical Society and since 1996 he has been European Officer of the University Colon and Rectum Surgeons.

Prof. Bruch is also a member of Leopoldina, the German Academy of Natural Sciences (since 1999), and from 2003 - 2005 he was spokesman of the Convention of Chairs of General and Visceral Surgery. Since 01.07.2004 he has been secretary of the German Society for Visceral Surgery.

On 14.05.1980 Prof. Bruch was awarded, jointly with Prof. Dr. E. Schmidt, the "von Langenbeck Prize" of the German Surgical Society.
