May 7, 2007. Earlybird and Investor Growth Capital (IGC) announced today the closing of a € 7,4 M series B financing round for Sidec Technologies AB. It is Earlybird´s first investment out of it´s new fund generation Earlybird IV. Sidec has developed a unique technology called Protein Tomography™ that provides structural 3D information of individual proteins or protein complexes in solution as well as in their natural context. The funding will enhance the commercial exploitation and international market penetration of Protein Tomography.
Next to Earlybird and IGC the existing major investor Industrifonden joined the syndicate. Sidec was founded in 2000 as a spin-out from the Karolinska Institute based on the research of Prof. Ulf Skoglund. After refinement of the technology and procedures through various customer projects the company has entered the full commercial phase in 2006. With its proprietary Protein Tomography technology Sidec’s mission is to radically increase the quality of drug discovery and development by providing crucial structural information of proteins in their natural environment. Prior to this financing round Sidec had raised € 11,0 M in Venture Capital from Industrifonden, Karolinska Development Fund, Karolinska Development and FEI Company.
"The elucidation of target function or mode of drug action in various biological systems from cellular assays to the human being is among the most pressing questions that influence the success rate of drug development. Protein Tomography provides unique insight and fills an identifiable gap in the technologies available today" states Marion Jung, Principal at Earlybird Venture Capital. Rolf Mathies, General Partner at Earlybird adds: "We are intrigued by the value that Sidec’s technology can bring through-out the entire chain of drug development, from early discovery to late stage projects in clinical phases. We are delighted to support the company and its management team in making this value available for its customers and partners."
"This is a new and unique technology, that is already making its way into the market, says Jakob Lindberg, investment manager at Investor Growth Capital. We are looking forward to taking part of the establishment of one more successful Swedish biotech company."
"We are pleased that the management team of Sidec has achieved an impressive recognition by the European venture community” says Industrifonden's investment manager Hedvig Andersén. "We have always believed in the strength of the company and the power of the technology."
Sidec’s CEO Hans Johansson commented: "We are delighted to welcome Jakob Lindberg and Rolf Mathies to our board of directors. Global networks as well as industry expertise will be highly important to deploy our business strategy and lift Sidec to the next level of commercial success."
